Prototype description

Drummond’s T9 was basically a reworking of his M7 tank – the same boiler (raised) with an extended firebox (12” longer), the same cylinders, slightly modified bogie, larger driving wheels and an added tender. Many of the fittings are identical.

66 locos were built between June 1899 and December 1901. All were still running when BR was created but a large number were retired in 1951 to 1952. About half made it until 1958 but all were retired by the end of 1961. Number 120 was preserved and is currently (2024) undergoing a major overhaul at the Swanage Railway.

The model will be available in both original form and the later superheated version with extended smokebox.
It will only be available with the narrow cab – I ran out of room on the etch for the wide cab version.
I am now moving on to vinyl wraps rather than transfers for the models. See comments on this in the 2024 News section. They will be available in Drummond green, SR green and BR black.

The tender supplied will be the Drummond “water cart” bogie 4000 gallon version.

NOTE – This is only available in 1/32 scale.

Note the clear cab – no visible regulator and full backhead detail. Only needs a driver figure & fireman to complete the effect. It would be good to have the driver leaning out of the cab with a rotating head linked to the reverser so that he looks in the direction of travel – no prizes for the first to do it!

Like all of my current models this is entirely made of nickel silver with lost-wax brass castings made from 3D printed masters, copper boiler, copper gas tank and, in this case, plastic centred wheels. The boiler uses 3 flues with a ceramic burner that is remotely adjustable for idling.

The model is radio controlled only – no manual option – it would have involved too many compromises.
See here for more details of the R/C system. It provides controls for the regulator, reverser, idling the burner, over-riding the pump bypass and uncoupling. It also provides feedback on speed, boiler pressure, water level and battery voltage with warnings when pressure goes too high, or voltage or water level too low. The system is fully integrated at no extra cost.
